The 70-180mm F2.8 G2 marks the evolution of the first-generation model and incorporates several improvements. At the top of the list is the inclusion of TAMRON's Vibration Compensation stabilization mechanism. The lens remains the lightest and most compact in its class while now featuring an image stabilizer.

The optical formula has been reworked compared to the first generation, delivering very high image quality across the entire focal range. The minimum focus distance is 0.3 m at 70 mm and 0.85 m at 180 mm. The model still employs the swift and precise linear VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) motor, whether for photos or videos (improved subject tracking). The 70-180mm F2.8 G2 now also supports the TAMRON Lens Utility solution for customizing the lens (via computer or Android app). The new design is more ergonomic and resistant to scratches. The A065 model combines maneuverability and practicality, a hallmark of the G2 label applied to a professional bright telephoto zoom lens.
